In today's world of interior design, Japandi has emerged as a trendsetter, beautifully combining the minimalist aesthetics of Japanese and Scandinavian styles. This unique blend offers a tranquil and uncluttered feel to bedrooms, making them ideal retreats for relaxation and serenity. Japandi style focuses on clean lines, a neutral color palette, and a harmonious blend of natural materials, creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
"In Japandi, less is more; in its simplicity lies tranquility."
Japandi bedrooms embrace minimalism. This involves decluttering and choosing furniture and decor that serve a purpose, avoiding unnecessary embellishments. The key is to create a space that feels open and airy, giving importance to every item in the room.
Incorporating natural materials like wood, bamboo, and linen is essential in a Japandi bedroom. These materials not only add warmth and texture but also help in creating an eco-friendly and sustainable environment.
The color scheme in a Japandi bedroom is predominantly neutral. Soft whites, greys, and earth tones dominate, providing a calm and soothing atmosphere. This subtle color palette helps in creating a space that feels both inviting and relaxing.
Furniture in a Japandi bedroom is characterized by its functionality and simplicity. Low-profile beds, streamlined dressers, and simple nightstands are common. The furniture pieces are often multifunctional, serving more than one purpose, which is a nod to efficient Scandinavian design.
While the color palette is neutral, texture plays a vital role in a Japandi bedroom. Mixing different textures like wool, cotton, and rattan adds depth and interest to the room. Textural contrasts can be introduced through rugs, throw pillows, and bedding.
In Japandi design, the emphasis is on quality. Choose high-quality pieces that are durable and timeless. It's better to have a few well-crafted items than a room full of disposable decor.

Lighting in a Japandi bedroom should be soft and warm. Use a combination of natural light, floor lamps, and pendant lights to create a cozy and inviting space.
Art and craftsmanship are important in Japandi design. Incorporate handmade items or artwork that adds a personal touch to the bedroom, reflecting the craftsmanship valued in both Japanese and Scandinavian cultures.
Regularly decluttering and organizing is crucial in maintaining the minimalist appeal of a Japandi bedroom. Every item should have its place, contributing to the overall tranquility of the space.
Creating a Japandi bedroom is about finding the right balance between minimalism and warmth, simplicity and texture, functionality and aesthetics. It’s a style that celebrates the beauty of simplicity and the joy of serene, uncluttered spaces. By following these principles, you can create a bedroom that is not only stylish but also a peaceful sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation.

The dining table is more than just a piece of furniture; it's a central element of home life. In this context, the choice of shape can significantly impact both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Oval dining tables have risen in popularity for their unique blend of style and practicality, offering advantages that distinguish them from traditional rectangular or square tables.
One of the prime advantages of oval tables is their suitability for small dining areas. The rounded edges create an illusion of more space and prevent the cramped feeling often associated with sharp-cornered tables. This makes them a highly practical choice for apartments or compact rooms, where every inch of space counts.
The oval shape inherently encourages inclusivity and interaction at the dining table. Unlike rectangular tables with a defined head, oval tables create a more democratic dining experience. This design fosters engaging conversations and equal participation among guests, making it ideal for fostering social connections.
Oval tables fit seamlessly into a variety of interior designs. Whether your home embraces a modern, rustic, or traditional aesthetic, an oval table can complement and enhance your decor style. This versatility makes it a suitable choice for many homes, adapting to changing decor trends and personal tastes.
Available in a range of materials, oval tables offer both durability and style. Choices range from classic wood, which brings warmth and tradition to a space, to modern glass, which offers a sleek and contemporary look. This variety ensures that there's an oval table to suit every preference and need.
Incorporating real-life examples and testimonials from homeowners who have chosen oval tables can provide practical insights. These case studies illustrate the table's practicality and aesthetic appeal in diverse settings, offering a glimpse into how they can enhance different types of dining spaces.
Choosing an oval dining table is more than a design decision; it's an investment in a functional, stylish, and sociable dining experience. Whether you're furnishing a small apartment or looking for a table that brings people together, an oval table offers a unique and compelling combination of benefits.

While the term "Mid-Century Modern" may have been coined as late as 1983 by art historian Cara Greenberg, the design ethos traces its roots back to the mid-1930s through the 1960s. Its ascendancy was accelerated by an influx of European immigrants skilled in Bauhaus and Danish Modernism. The post-World War II era further fueled its growth, with technological advances and new materials like molded plywood and fiberglass becoming staples.
While both styles share a "modern" moniker and post-war origins, they are distinct in philosophy and execution.
When it comes to Mid-Century Modern furniture, two terms often pop up that capture its essence: 'sleek' and 'retro.' But what do these words really mean in this context?
The term 'sleek' refers to the design's streamlined, polished appearance, often featuring clean lines and a minimalist approach.
On the flip side, 'retro' harks back to the design trends of the mid-20th century. In terms of furniture, Mid-Century Modern design often incorporates vintage or retro pieces. These can be original vintage finds or reproductions inspired by the era. The furniture is typically sleek and streamlined, with clean lines and minimal ornamentation. Ah, the quest for the perfect Mid Century Modern Dresser—it's almost like dating. You know what you want, but finding "the one" can be an overwhelming process. Not to worry, this comprehensive buyer's guide will hold your hand through each step. By the end, you'll be more than ready to make an educated decision that both you and your spouse will cherish for years to come.
Mid Century Modern Dressers are the epitome of aesthetic durability. With sleek lines, functional design, and a touch of vintage charm, they effortlessly slide into contemporary settings. And let's be honest, a good dresser is like a devoted spouse: supportive, reliable, and always there when you need them.
It's easy to get swept up in the excitement of something that looks great. However, well made mid century Modern dressers have distinct characteristics—Handmade, Solid Hardwood, and FSC certified to name a few. If your prospective dresser lacks these, it might be time to swipe left and keep looking.
An essential thing to check when eyeing that gorgeous dresser is the material. Opting for FSC Certified Hardwood not only assures quality but also signals that you're investing in a sustainable future. Trust is paramount, especially when it concerns the environment.
Handmade furniture speaks a language that mass-produced items can't. Each cut, joint, and finish tells a story of dedication and skill. It's a personal touch that makes your dresser more than just a furniture piece, transforming it into an heirloom that is built with the sole purpose of being made to last, from the best materials.
While the design and wood type often steal the show, it's crucial not to overlook the slide mechanisms in your dresser drawers. Opt for high-quality undermount slides or soft-close slides to ensure an effortlessly smooth and near-silent drawer operation. These slides are mounted beneath the drawer, allowing for a clean look that fully showcases the beauty of the FSC Certified Hardwood.
Brands like Blum and KVM are the go-to for premium slide mechanisms. Unlike cheaper, Chinese-made slides often manufactured from inferior materials, these companies prioritize durability and functionality. Investing in superior slides is a subtle but effective way to elevate your entire dresser experience. When you pull out a drawer and it glides smoothly, you'll be reminded that you made the right choice.
When it comes to the drawer construction, you generally have two choices: solid wood or Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). Solid wood drawers, often made from FSC Certified Hardwood, offer superior durability, strength, and aesthetic appeal. MDF, although cost-effective, lacks the sturdiness and rich texture that solid wood offers. When you opt for solid wood, you're not just choosing a material; you're choosing longevity and beauty.
The way your drawer boxes are constructed is another crucial factor. Dovetail drawer boxes are considered the gold standard in furniture construction. This age-old technique involves interlocking pieces of wood to provide a joint that is robust and can withstand years of use. Brad nailed drawer fronts, on the other hand, offer less durability as they are simply tacked onto the drawer box. In short, dovetailing is to dresser drawers what a strong, supportive spouse is to a happy, enduring marriage—absolutely essential.
To simplify your shopping experience, here's a quick checklist to ensure your dresser ticks all the right boxes:
Shopping for a Mid Century Modern Dresser is a nuanced, multi-layered process that goes well beyond mere aesthetics. It's not just about the external beauty, the gleaming finishes, or the era-specific design. It's a careful balance of form and function, a symbiosis of external allure and internal mechanics. Companies like Blum or KVM are often the invisible heroes behind those smooth-gliding, soft-closing drawers that add a touch of luxury to everyday use.
The quality of the wood is another key consideration. Opting for FSC Certified Hardwood ensures that you're investing in a piece that is both durable and sustainably sourced, giving you peace of mind. You'll also want to consider the craftsmanship that goes into the piece. Does the artisan have a wealth of experience and expertise? Are the drawer boxes dovetailed for extra strength, or are they merely brad nailed? These seemingly minor details can significantly impact the longevity and functionality of your dresser.

When it comes to elegance and durability, few woods can rival the timeless allure of black walnut. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve deep into the beauty and durability of black walnut wood, revealing insights, tips, and practical advice for incorporating this extraordinary material into your own projects.
From its origins as a native hardwood in North America to its impeccable finish and ability to withstand the test of time, we will explore the many facets that make black walnut wood a true gem in the realm of natural materials. Whether you are considering black walnut for a furniture piece, a flooring option, or simply want to learn more about this exquisite wood species, this guide is your go-to resource.
Join us as we embark on a journey through the fascinating world of black walnut wood, and uncover why it has become a favorite choice for artisans and enthusiasts alike.
Black walnut wood is known for its distinctive characteristics and unique properties that set it apart from other types of wood. One of the most notable features of black walnut is its rich, dark brown color, which can range from light to deep chocolate hues. The wood also boasts a striking grain pattern, with swirling lines and occasional knots that add depth and character to any piece.
In terms of durability, black walnut wood is highly regarded. It is a dense hardwood, which means it is less prone to dents and scratches compared to softer woods. This makes it an excellent choice for furniture that will be used frequently, such as dining tables or chairs. Additionally, black walnut has a natural resistance to decay and insect damage, making it a durable option for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Another advantage of black walnut wood is its stability. It has a relatively low shrinkage rate, meaning it is less likely to warp or crack over time compared to some other types of wood. This stability makes black walnut an ideal choice for flooring, where changes in humidity and temperature can often cause wood to expand and contract.
Black walnut wood has a long and storied history in furniture making. Native to North America, this hardwood has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples for both practical and decorative purposes. The wood was highly valued for its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, black walnut became increasingly popular among European furniture makers. Its rich color and exquisite grain made it a favorite choice for crafting high-quality, heirloom pieces. Black walnut furniture became a symbol of wealth and sophistication, adorning the homes of the upper class.
In the United States, black walnut wood played a prominent role in the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This movement emphasized the use of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship, and black walnut was seen as the epitome of these ideals. Many iconic furniture pieces from this era, such as the Morris chair and Stickley furniture, were crafted from black walnut.
Green walnuts are the unripe, soft-shelled predecessors to the hard-shelled nuts we commonly consume. Picked from the tree during late spring to early summer, their fleshy, green exterior exudes a slightly citrusy aroma and a somewhat tart taste. These immature walnuts are often used to make specialty items like nocino, a green walnut liqueur, or pickled walnuts. Rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, even in their unripe stage, green walnuts offer unique culinary and nutritional potential. Their texture is softer and more yielding than their mature counterparts, and they're commonly used in traditional medicines for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Choosing black walnut wood for your furniture comes with a range of benefits. First and foremost, it adds a touch of timeless elegance to any space. The rich, dark tones of black walnut create a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a popular choice for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, black walnut wood is incredibly durable. Its dense nature and natural resistance to decay and insect damage ensure that your furniture will stand the test of time. This durability also means that black walnut pieces can be enjoyed for generations, making them a sustainable choice.
Black walnut wood is also highly workable, making it a favorite among craftsmen. It can be easily shaped and carved, allowing for intricate detailing and artistic expression in furniture design. This versatility opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to creating unique and personalized pieces.
Black walnut wood can be found in a wide range of home decor elements, from furniture to flooring and everything in between. Here are some popular uses of black walnut wood in interior design:
1. Furniture: Black walnut is often used to create stunning furniture pieces, such as dining tables, chairs, cabinets, and bed frames. Its rich color and grain pattern add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room.
2. Flooring: Black walnut flooring is highly sought after for its durability and beauty. The dark tones of the wood create a striking contrast against lighter walls and furnishings, making it a focal point in any space.
3. Countertops: Black walnut countertops are a luxurious addition to kitchens and bathrooms. The wood's natural warmth and durability make it an ideal choice for surfaces that are subjected to daily use.
4. Wall paneling: Black walnut wall paneling adds a touch of luxury and warmth to any room. Whether used as an accent wall or covering an entire space, it creates a sense of sophistication and refinement.
Taking proper care of your black walnut wood furniture is essential to ensure its longevity and beauty. Here are some tips on how to care for and maintain your black walnut pieces:
1. Regular dusting: Dust your black walnut furniture regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any surface dirt or debris. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or rough materials that could scratch the wood.
2. Avoid direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the color of black walnut wood to fade over time. Place your furniture away from windows or use curtains or blinds to protect it from harmful UV rays.
3. Use coasters and trivets: To protect the surface of your black walnut furniture from heat and moisture, use coasters for drinks and trivets for hot dishes. This will prevent unsightly water rings or heat marks from forming.
4. Apply a protective finish: Consider applying a protective finish, such as wax or oil, to your black walnut furniture. This will help seal the wood and enhance its natural beauty while providing a layer of protection against spills and stains.
While black walnut wood is highly esteemed, it's essential to understand how it compares to other hardwoods commonly used in furniture making. Here's a comparison of black walnut wood with some popular alternatives:
1. Oak: Oak is known for its strength and durability, similar to black walnut. However, oak has a lighter color and less pronounced grain pattern compared to black walnut. The choice between the two often comes down to personal preference and the desired aesthetic.
2. Maple: Maple is another durable hardwood commonly used in furniture making. It has a lighter color than black walnut and a subtle grain pattern. Maple is often chosen for its clean and minimalist look, while black walnut offers a more dramatic and rich appearance.
3. Cherry: Cherry wood has a reddish-brown hue that deepens over time, giving it a warm and inviting look. Like black walnut, cherry is highly regarded for its beauty and durability. The choice between the two often depends on the desired color tone and grain pattern.
If you're interested in purchasing black walnut wood products, there are several options available to you. Here are some places where you can find high-quality black walnut wood:

IS IT VENEER?
Be careful. Veneers are not solid
wood. One chip and its a wrap.
2
CAN IT BE REFINISHED?
Do you want to buy a new table in 5 years? If its veneer the answer is NO!
3
CHECK THE DETAILS
Big furniture companies can be deceiving. Read the fine print.
"Walnut finish" is not the same as solid walnut. Veneered particleboard can be called a "solid wood" product.
4
WARRANTY
Know the chain of custody. Where was it made. What are the warranty terms?
When it comes to investing in an extendable dining table, careful consideration of several essential factors is crucial before your purchase. Here are the key takeaways.
1.Know Your Space:
Before buying a dining table, assess the dimensions of your dining area and determine the available space. Measure the room to ensure that the extended and collapsed configurations of the table fit within the available space. A huge tip we tell customers is to physically put masking tape on the floor. This visual cue usually changes what size people think they need for their space when actually seeing it at scale.
2. Quality and Durability:
Know what you are buying. Is the table veneer or solid wood? Veneer tables are a micro-thin sheet of wood glued onto particleboard (you know the ikea stuff that looks like ground up sawdust). Unsure? check the details. If it says veneer, run fast.
3. The Finish:
Conversion Varnish or Catalyzed Lacquer are your top choices. Oil finish is preferable since water based finishes can get rings from glasses or moisture. Choose a matte finish since they are close to the wood and show texture without looking like bar top epoxy from a frat bar.
4. Extension Mechanism:
Take a look at the extension table mechanism. A smooth and reliable extension mechanism is crucial for hassle-free adjustments between the extended and collapsed configurations. Prioritize tables with intuitive extension systems that allow for seamless transitions, minimizing the effort required to modify the table's size. Check to see if the table leaves are self-storing.
5. Stability and Sturdiness:
Stability is paramount when selecting an extendable dining table. Ensure that the table exhibits exceptional stability and sturdiness, even when fully extended. A table with multiple leaves exceeding 2 or more will likely need a third leg. If there is no mention of this, the table WILL sag over time. Large manufacturers omit this since it is additional cost and hurts their bottom line.
6. Maintenance and Care:
Consider the maintenance requirements associated with the chosen dining table. Check the JANKA hardness, which is a measure of how easily the wood can dent. Pine or poplar is very low on this scale and dings super easily, while woods such as bamboo or ironwood are way more resistant to bumps and dings.
7:Price and Budget:
Establish a clear budget for your dining table purchase and explore options that align with your financial parameters. A 700-1500$ extension table is most likely not made from solid wood and will need to be replaced in a few years. While it is essential to remain within your budget, prioritize quality and longevity over price. 8. Reviews and Recommendations: Prior to finalizing your decision, seek out reviews that have actual photos. These reviews are rarely fake. Check the social media of the company you are purchasing from and look at the engagement and feedback of their customers. A little internet sleuthing can go a long way.

Modern mid century furniture is often handcrafted, and there are a number of reasons why this type of furniture is so valuable. First of all, handmade furniture is created with great attention to detail. The craftsman takes care to create each piece with precision, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of quality, using the most expensive woods available. Additionally, handmade furniture is unique - no two pieces are exactly alike. This means that each piece is truly one-of-a-kind, and it can add a special touch to any home. Finally, handmade furniture is built to last. Since it is made with such care and attention, it is designed to withstand years of use. For all these reasons, handmade furniture is an excellent investment for any home.
Handmade Modern furniture is not only stylish and timeless, but it can also help to reduce waste and support local jobs. When furniture is made to last, it eliminates the need for constant replacements (hello IKEA:) and helps to keep waste out of landfills. In addition, buying from local businesses supports your local economy and infrastructure. Everyone needs all the help they can get in this post covid world! Next time you are looking for a new piece of furniture, consider American made. Not only will you love the way it looks in your home, but you'll also feel great knowing that you are doing your part to reduce waste and support your community.
]]>How to Tell If a Walnut Credenza is Worth Buying?
A walnut credenza is an excellent piece to have in your modern home. It is the perfect way to display your favorite items and make them easily accessible. The best part about this type of credenza is that it can be customized. You can choose from a variety of different styles and finishes so that it matches with any room in your house.
Purchasing a credenza from a company like Moderncre8ve, who sources their hardwoods locally, builds them to last, and employs skilled craftsmen who have the talent for making exquisite pieces, will ensure that you are not investing in an impractical piec
Why do materials matter? What is veneer, mdf and plywood?
What are some of the common mistakes people make when trying to buy a credenza?
Materials:
Look for the words solid walnut in the product listing. A common trick big manufacturers use is to list the product as "solid wood" but it is actually made from a substrate with a very thin slice of walnut over the top of it. Because this material underneath is wood (albiet mdf or veneer core) it is technically solid wood. But not really.
It is made from a thin slice of walnut glued to ground-up wood fibers (ie sawdust) that is mixed with a binder agent and compressed under very high heat. It is very dimensionally stable and uniform but its biggest drawback is that when chipped it is very difficult to repair or impossible. Other names you may see are "engineered wood, "particle board" or "Veneer".
Solid wood looks better and can be refinished multiple times- even after damage. It is not commonly used in mass produced furniture because it is expensive, time consuming and most people dont even know the difference between solid or the two types above.
Ask if the piece is made from veneer or solid walnut. Most respectable brands use a combination of veneer with solid walnut doors or tops, and the casework is made from a veneer. This is ok because engineered wood is very stable and unform, and commonly used in areas that will not be damaged, or that are out of sight.
Another dirty trick big manufacturers use is the term "walnut finish". This is usually the cheapest wood available stained so that it appears to be walnut. Poplar, pine, and other crap woods are passed off as "walnut" to people who aren't experts in the field. These woods are up to 12 times cheaper than the real thing. That doesn't mean they don't have a use or place or situations when it is appropriate to use them. They make great paint-grade woods or moldings. In short, Just don't pay a premium price for something that is not premium.

Solid wood furniture brings an air of timeless elegance to any space. Whether you're a proud owner of a rich mahogany dining table or a rustic oak wardrobe, the beauty and strength of solid wood are unmatched. But how do you maintain the natural allure of these precious pieces? In this guide, you'll find everything you need to know to care for and preserve your solid wood furniture. Isn't it time you gave your furniture the love it deserves?
Solid wood furniture is as unique as fingerprints. Knowing the type of wood you have is like understanding a friend's personality. Isn't it true that friends need specific care and attention?
Hardwoods: Like oak, mahogany, and cherry. Softwoods: Such as pine, cedar, and fir. Here's how you can identify wood types:
Taking care of solid wood furniture is like tending to a garden; daily attention keeps it thriving. The simple act of dusting, wiping, and placing objects carefully can prolong the life of your furniture, much like watering a plant helps it grow.
Oh no, a spill! Now what? Dealing with spills on solid wood furniture is like handling a minor emergency at home. You've got to act quickly and wisely.
Polishing your solid wood furniture is like grooming your hair. It adds shine, protects, and maintains the wood's beauty. Who doesn't want their furniture to look its best?
Just like people wear different clothes in different seasons, solid wood furniture requires seasonal care. How do you prepare your furniture for winter's chill or summer's warmth?
Scratches and dents in solid wood furniture can be heart-wrenching, but they're not the end of the world. Think of them like scars that tell a story. Want to erase some of those stories?
Moving solid wood furniture is like handling a delicate piece of art. It's heavy, awkward, but precious. How do you move it without causing damage?
Is your solid wood furniture looking a little tired? Refinishing it is like giving it a second life. Why buy new when you can renew?
Solid wood furniture is not just a piece of decor; it's a part of your home's soul. Taking care of it is an ongoing relationship, much like caring for a treasured friend. With the right attention, love, and care, your solid wood furniture can last a lifetime. Ready to show your furniture some love?
A: It's best to use products specifically designed for wood, as regular cleaners might be too harsh.
Q: How often should I polish my wood furniture?A: Polishing every few months is generally enough, but it depends on the type of wood and usage.
Q: What should I do if I spill water on my wood furniture?A: Act quickly! Blot the spill immediately with a soft, dry cloth to minimize damage.
Q: Can I place my solid wood furniture near a radiator or heating vent?A: It's best to avoid placing wood furniture near heat sources, as it can cause the wood to dry and crack.
Q: How do I fix a deep scratch on my wooden table?A: Deep scratches may require sanding and refinishing. If unsure, consult a professional.

Coming into the new year, planning has looked so different than last. This is the story for literally every business, regardless of size. As you can see from our last staff picture (and with one less than shown at this point in time), we are an exceptionally small outfit, creating exceptional furniture. We were granted a small amount of funding through the first round of the Payroll Protection Program, and we are hopeful to qualify for the second round, as every bit helps. Through all of the changes and differences in planning, what has really struck me has been the cost margins, specifically the increases (yes, plural) in the price of raw materials.
Our packing materials rep was the first to inform us that there would be a 9% increase overall in our cost of materials we purchase to ship our orders, effective December 14. This, he explained, was directly attributed to the pandemic's effect on demand for paper production (we use high grade carboard crating for our furniture). We said we understood, and tweaked the budget.
These awesome cardboard crates are shipped out on pallets, and because the cost of rough lumber increased, we saw this in the cost of each pallet we purchased for our shipping. Another look at the budget, and another set of financial adaptations.
Next up was our freight shipping broker. Because of widespread lock downs and general loss of workforce among all carriers, pricing increases and extended lead times ensued. Stands to reason, so we made appropriate adjustments to our lead times, and communicated this to all of our customers, most of whom were very gracious and understanding. As we include the cost of shipping and delivery in our pricing, we didn't need to discuss that part, but added it into the mounting budget changes.
The most recent increase was in lumber, the very heart and soul of what we do. We partner with two local sawmills for our material, both supply us with the highest quality American hardwoods, and we couldn't be happier with what is supplied. Our rep was in town last week, and was kind enough to visit us at the shop. He had never been, and was so interested in our process, quality and design of our work. He explained that with our next order, we would see a 7% increase in the kiln-dried lumber we use, and that they would be absorbing another 7% themselves. I wanted to cry...
A lot of attention is being paid to the plight of the small business in the face of this pandemic. Most recently, numbers indicate that as many as 63% of all small businesses have faced permanent closure since April 2020. That number is staggering, and makes everyone on our team so grateful to still be operating. With all of this in mind, I want to say this:
We take immense pride in our work, and in the craft itself. We will never be able to compete with cheap, fast furniture. Never. Our commitment to our customers lies in unparalleled quality and service; in furniture created for aesthetic and function, and of heirloom quality. We will continue to only use the best materials we can get, even as the cost of those materials increases, and only pass on what we must to our customers in terms of price increases.
Every time someone makes the choice to purchase from a small, independent business, they are literally supporting the people who are making with their hands the items they have selected. They are supporting those people's families. They are truly, honestly making a difference, and keeping an essential part of our economy alive. I mean all of this in a very literal sense, one that has been highlighted by the current state of everything. We are extremely grateful for your business, and for your referrals, and for continuing to keep our small and talented team employed. Thank you from all of us at ModernCre8ve, and Happy New Year!
]]>As I read that post, it became clear that it’s Millenials who are killing MCM, or at least MCM as their parents embraced it. As a matter of fact, Millenials are accused of "killing" lots of things, and a quick Google search (Millenials killing...) pins the death of cereal, power lunches, capitalism, dinner parties, even mayonnaise on this generation. Really?
I'll preface my input from here out by stating that I am technically a Gen Xer, and even further classified as a Xennial. This being said, I am with my younger cohorts on this evolution, especially in light of 2020 which has been a veritable clustercuss of hard choices and hard reckonings. This evolution of MCM design and style is coming at a time where everyone, not just Millenials, are craving softness, warmth and cosiness at home. Throughout a year of #stayhome, and it's abundantly clear that interior design and style is a big part of creating that feeling, and people just want a sanctuary to help weather the storm. MCM relies on careful and precise lines to favor function over embellishment. This is the foundation of the style, and while not super cosy on it's own, there are thousands of ways to soften the spartan beauty of the design. Let's take a look at three to kick off this most welcome evolution of style:
Much of MCM furniture relies on gorgeous, natural hardwood (or it should) as a benchmark of construction. These pieces will tend to have traditional box cushions, or perhaps streamlined, taught and firm upholstery. One way these traditional textiles are evolving to be cosier is by incorporating a higher grade of construction in the cushioning itself. Instead of having cushions constructed of firm foam, opt for spring cushions with a down encasement. Not only will you get the luxurious feel of a feather seat, but the springs used instead of foam last for decades with satisfying support. Box cushions still look, well, "boxy", but certainly don't feel like their predecessors. In fact, ModernCre8ve will be offering a classically styled lounge chair with this type of cushioning in the very near future!
Infusing MCM design with modern lighting concepts and design is nothing new, but taking a cue from biomimicry is a growing trend. Using nature as a blueprint is the ultimate way to lend a tranquil feel and balance out pieces that have sharp lines, and in many instances, these pieces are constructed not only to mimic nature, but with natural or upcycled materials. This desire to source items responsibly has been gaining traction recently, and Graypants Studio embodies this in many of their pieces, and we are head-over-heels for their Scraplights.
If you've invested in timeless MCM furniture as the base for your style, freshening up the look and feel of your pieces is as easy as adding soft throws and bedding. Think accent pillows with down inserts swathed in knit or velvet covers, a wool (not synthetic, thank you) blanket or flokati throw, natural linen bedding or a down duvet. Speaking to linen bedding and duvet, we are obsessed with seriously everything offered at Rough Linen, and they manufacture in California!
Evolution is just a more innocuous way of saying "change". When it comes to the evolution of a whole era of design, new elements should be incorporated to evoke a desired feeling, while still honoring the classic look of MCM. And, instead of vilifying Millenials for the death of MCM, we can simply thank them for apply some fundamentals of evolution, and embrace it!
]]>With 2018 in our rearview, it's time to look forward into not so distant horizon to see what the most popular trends for 2019 interior design will be. You will see these popping up in homes, restaurants and magazines this year. We scoured the interweb and compiled everything for you here; blog posts, social media posts and articles from the top interior designers. So what did we find? Well honestly, it's a bit eclectic this year and there is no overarching commonality between the design trends for 2019.
You will see this trend creeping into design forward pieces in 2019. This solid Walnut credenza with intricate repeating textures engraved directly into the doors by Cleveland based MODERNCRE8VE is a great example of this.
Expect to see more of this paint color in homes and incorporated into home decor this year. For years Pantone has been defining color trends, and this year is no exception. From Pantone "In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity".
Terrazzo, the 80’s era formica-esque pattern normally reserved for floor tile, has been trending over the past few seasons on everything from subway tile to restaurant interiors. It was only a matter of time that it would appear as a one of our main interior design trend predictions 2019 withstanding. Playful, abstract, and totally radical, Terrazzo is great for a home with eclectic or mid-century modern interiors as it works perfectly with the mood of both. Plus, since its background is usually based around a neutral, it will help any room appear larger and more open.
Handcrafted authenticity
Look to see more focus on put on handmade and smaller furniture companies via platforms like ETSY that are able to deliver much higher quality at increasingly more competitive prices. We see a movement away from overpriced sweatshop made mass produced furniture made in China ala companies like Design Within Reach, West Elm. Pieces like this minimalist walnut and steel plate coffee table from maker Bricker and Beam
Tropical Foliage Wallpapers
The latest wallpaper trend taking the interior design world by storm are bold tropical prints and botanicals with a retro twist."Bringing the outside in to your home has been a growing trend for many seasons. With the added wellness benefit of having plants surround you we are seeing more and more foliage creep into interiors," says Paula Taylor, Graham & Brown wallpaper trends expert and stylist.
Brass Accents
Polished Brass has been popular for several years, so were not surprised it's on our list of top interior design trends for 2019. We like seeing brass used in moderation to punch up bathroom decor or living rooms by adding visual and textural interest and to otherwise mundane objects. This dining table by MODERNCRE8VE harnesses the perfect balance of glam and elegance, with brass being incorporated into the end caps and into the table in a random geometric pattern that begs for a closer look.

So what did we find? Well honestly, it's a bit eclectic this year and there is no overarching commonality between the design trends for 2019. We saw lots of forward thinking focus on natural materials manipulated in unexpected ways; a melange of sorts where things like geometry and opposting materials are combined with surprisingly cohesive results
]]>We didn't necessarily want to move, but it got to the point where we ran out of space, and the floor we were on (3rd) took a different direction tenant wise. In retrospect, it may have been for the better since we outgrew our previous space probably a year and a half ago and have been climbing over each other for awhile now in very cramped quarters.
There is so much work to be done but the new space is huge and has tons of light. Underneath the nerves, we're very excited for our next home. The laundry list of work that needs to be done includes: electrical (to be able to run our machinery), plumbing (for water gas + heat) just to name a few. We also have to figure out where everything is going layout wise as were consolidating everything under one roof. We actually had TWO spaces in the old building, the workshop as well as a very large storage space that we used for photoshoots as well as lumber storage. That storage space was actually bigger than our actual workshop was is completely filled.
One thing we debated back and forth for a few months before moving, was that a "bigger shop means we need to increase our production". A few years ago we decided we will never have a huge company and will never become a furniture company like Joybird, or even our (local) neighbors Rustbelt Reclamation. We decided instead to buy the best machinery so a smaller team (currently 4 total) can work more efficiently. Smaller is always better, less stressful, and the quality of the finished pieces is ALWAYS better.
We would rather have a steady flow of work and be hands on every project from beginning to end, rather than hire a ton of employees and churn out product. Something always gets lost when you cant be hands on every order that goes out the door. In the end, this means less headache, and gives us the flexibility to experiment with new designs, and not have the burden of expenses holding us down. Unfortunately, this means we either have to turn down orders when we get very busy, or extend our lead times. Thankfully the quality will always be there with this kind of business philosophy, and moods will be much better and easy going during the work week.
Keep up to date with our progress on our Facebook and Instagram pages as the setup continues in the new space!

We were approached by them at the end of last year and have quietly been building stock levels over the past few months to prepare for product launch on their online sales channels.
A huge thanks to our in-house wholesale manager Andi, who worked very closely with the Wayfair team to get our products prepared for launch.

There are many online vendors of midcentury style hairpin legs. I've even bought a few myself over the years. As a furniture maker, i figured it was something i should dive into as i didn't like the quotes i was getting for wholesale from third parties. I had intended to sell them myself but honestly, its just not worth the labor involved so I've decided to post how to make them here on the Moderncre8ve blog. So dive in just like I did…. But expect some frustration and speed bumps along the way. Luckily I'm here to save you the trouble with this DIY tutorial!
The main glaring problem i noticed when i took on this project was that there were tons of websites about how to attach and where to buy hairpin legs, but ZERO websites, blogs, websites or videos about how to build and weld your own hairpin legs from scratch or any DIY tutorial thereof. GODAMMIT! Time to do figure out how to make them yourself, but luckily Ill take you through the build process and outline all the tools you need to make your own (with links) and photos.
You will need the following:
Instructions:
Step 1-
With the angle grinder, cut the 3/8″ rod into 32″ lengths with the cutoff blade on the angle grinder or with a chop saw. Were going to be making 16″ (coffee table height) legs. A sharpie works best for marking the steel.
Step 2:
Take the 32″ length rods and line them up (i needed to make 6 legs for this tutorial), marking them at 16″. We will be bending them in half, if you need a different length cut them shorter or longer, then mark halfway along the length.
Step 3-
Stick them in the bender as pictured, with the halfway length mark meeting the end of the center bend pivot. Look closely to see the sharpie mark.
Step 4-
Bend! You now have something that kind of resembles a hairpin leg! Hallelujah!
Step 5:
You're halfway there.
Step 6:
Mark and Trim back the bent rods so they are all exactly the same length. Here I'm using a square on my festool MFT. My intended tabletop is 1″ thick so I'm marking the hairpins at 15″ (15″ +1″ tabletop= 16″ height) then cutting them all again on the chop saw. I haven't quite figured out how to get exactly each side to be the same length after bending so if you have tips here, let me know!
The most important thing to note here is ACCURACY. If you are off in marking your cut lines by even a 16th of a an your table will wobble when you attach the legs! You have been warned.
Step 7:
Grind down the burrs on rods where you cut them off with either a grinding wheel or abrasive flap disc on an angle grinder. I used a 40 grit abrasive flap wheel
Step 8:
Cut the 1 1/2″ 16 gauge steel bar into 3.5″ and 5″ lengths. Im using a plate shear but you can use angle grinder with a cutoff disc, but make sure to cut your lines precisely.
Step 9:
Time to weld…Butt the 3.5″ and the 5″ bar as pictured, beveling the joint (with an angle grinder) where the two pieces meet so the weld puddle has somewhere to go. Check for square! Tack welds, then weld the remainder of the joint. Turn on the welder and open the valve on your c25. Do not attempt to weld on top of plywood, Mdf or anything flammable (did that- facepalm!) and then attempt just clamp to your workpiece with the ground clamp. Either get a plate of metal and fasten it to your tabletop or buy a proper welding table.
Step 10-
Grind down your welds on your butt joint and you should have something that looks like this. At this point it is best to sort out where you are putting your mounting holes before attaching the legs. Use a center punch to mark your holes and drill.
Step 11:
Grab the hairpins and place them on top of the piece you just welded together. I built this small wooden jig that angles back at 15 degrees in a classic midcentury style. You can make a jig like this out of steel (probably a good idea since wood is flammable!...lazy) at any angle you want. 10-15 degrees works for most of the furniture i make. Make a few tack welds, then weld the rod onto the plate. Make sure your ground clamp is clamped on your welding table and you're not standing in water or with wet shoes, and you're ok to handle the hairpins while you weld. I use one hand to hold them and the other with the welding electrode while in doing this part. No ground clamp and you won't get the electrode to fire anyways and will just shoot out a bunch of wire.
Step 12:
You made your own hairpins! Thank baby jesus. Rub down with furniture wax to prevent rust!
